Blank teams and empty logo boxes on your out-of-town ribbon
An empty box where a logo should be reads as broken from every seat in the house. On a Daktronics Sports Wire 4000 setup there are two separate places this breaks: the team data inside Sports Wire, and the logo files your content looks up. Here is how each one works, based on Daktronics' documentation, and what we check first.
Two different failures
If the team name itself is blank in the Sports Wire schedule, the team is missing from Sports Wire's team database. If the name is there but the logo is empty, the team data is fine and the board cannot find a logo file that matches what the feed sent. They have different fixes.
Blank team names: the Sports Wire team database
Daktronics documents this for new teams (its article is written for MLB and MiLB, so treat it as the same mechanism rather than a college-specific guide): the opponent shows but the new team is blank because Sports Wire's team list has not been updated. The fix is under Driver Configurations, on the Teams tab: pick the league, edit the team's location, short name, long name and nickname, then Apply and OK. Daktronics then has you back up the configuration from the Sports Wire icon at top left and restart Sports Wire. Programs new to Division I and schools that changed names are the usual suspects each fall.
Empty logos: the file name has to match exactly
Daktronics content looks logos up by name through media RTD. Per Daktronics, the image files live in the MediaRTD content folder (Daktronics' path is under ProgramData, Daktronics\VNET4\Content\MediaRTD), and each file name must match the incoming data exactly, for example a team's abbreviation plus .png. In Content Studio, the field is set up with Is media RTD checked and a placeholder image. One character of difference between the feed and the file name, or a school that changed its abbreviation, and the box comes up empty.
What we check first
Pull the full schedule for your conference and every non-conference opponent before the season, and compare the names and abbreviations the feed sends against your logo folder. Do it again after any realignment year, when conference names and team lists move. Then look for empty boxes on a busy night before your first home date, from the bowl.
Where GameSlate fits
GameSlate ships team logos with the scores, fetched and cached by league so the same team number in two sports never collides, and the board never waits on a hand-maintained logo folder. It renders finished out-of-town pages in your look and writes them to the content share your show already plays, so there is no driver, schedule clear, output port or logo-file mapping to keep alive. Scores, clocks and finals update within a minute all game, and if the internet drops the board holds its last good pages and your phone gets a text with the cause. It runs on the Daktronics machine you already own and installs remotely in under an hour.
Quick answers
Why are out-of-town logos missing on my Daktronics ribbon?
With media RTD, Daktronics content finds logos by file name, and the name must match the incoming data exactly. A mismatch between the feed's team name or abbreviation and the file in the MediaRTD folder leaves the box empty.
Why is a team name blank in Sportswire 4000?
Daktronics says a blank new team means Sports Wire's team database has not been updated. Edit it under Driver Configurations, Teams tab, then back up the configuration and restart Sports Wire.
