Out-of-town scores on videoboards: the complete guide
Fans look at the out-of-town scoreboard more than almost anything else your boards play, and it is the least-discussed part of game presentation. I've run videoboards at Boston College and Northeastern for 10 years. This is how live scores from other games actually get onto stadium displays and LED ribbons, what each route costs, and how much human attention each one eats on game day.
The three ways venues do it
An operator typing scores
Small venues still do it: someone with a phone updating a template between plays. Free, and worth exactly what it costs. Scores lag by minutes, finals get missed, and it fully occupies a person during your own game. Fine for a high school; below the bar for college fans who all have live scores in their pockets.
Score feed packages into templates
The industry default. A licensed real-time feed (Stats Perform sold through Daktronics Sportswire 4000, Sportzcast's network, and similar) streams into dynamic templates your control system displays. Data quality is professional. The costs are two: money (packages bill per sport, per season, per venue, typically four figures for one sport) and attention (an operator picks games one checkbox at a time before every show, maintains logo mappings, and watches for games silently dropping out of the feed mid-quarter).
Software that renders the pages for you

Questions operators actually ask
Can this run during basketball season too?
Data packages bill per sport, so a multi-sport venue pays repeatedly. Flat-fee automated software covers football Saturdays and a full hoops slate in the same license, which for most athletic departments is where the math tips.
What happens when a feed hiccups?
Dynamic templates show the hiccup: an empty slot, a frozen clock, a missing logo box. Rendered-page systems hold the last complete content, alert the crew, and catch up automatically. A stale score for a minute beats an empty board every time.
What does installation involve?
