Sportswire 4000 not updating scores: what to check, in order

The ribbon is frozen or blank and gates open in an hour. When out-of-town scores stop in Daktronics Sports Wire 4000, the cause is almost always one of a short list that Daktronics documents in its own knowledge base. Here they are in the order we would check them from the booth, from the feed coming in to the data going out to the board.

Step 1: Is data reaching Sports Wire at all?

Start on the Sports Wire 4000 start screen and open Diagnostics. Pick your output port from the dropdown and give it a few seconds. Daktronics uses this view to confirm data is flowing. If nothing arrives, the problem is upstream of the board: the feed, the account or the software version. If data arrives but the board is still blank, skip to step 4.

Step 2: A red connection light on the STATS driver

If the STATS driver's connection light is red, no scores arrive, and you see an error like Failed at attempting to access the XML STATS database, Daktronics says the usual cause is a locked STATS account, typically after several wrong password attempts. There is nothing to fix on your machine: the account has to be unlocked by STATS (Stats Perform). Make that call early, because it is out of your hands until they answer.

Step 3: It stopped working and nothing changed on your end

Stats Perform moved its feed to a new URL in early 2023. Daktronics' fix is to update Sports Wire 4000 to version 2.1.24.0 (released January 6, 2023) or later; no port or configuration changes are needed. If a backup or rarely used machine has not been updated since, it can sit silent while the main one works. Before updating, Daktronics recommends backing up the Sports Wire configuration from the top-left menu.

Step 4: Data comes in, but the board is blank

When port monitoring shows data arriving in Sports Wire but nothing shows on the display, Daktronics points to the output port. The output should be a UDP port, 20000 by default (20001, 20002 and up for additional outputs), sent as broadcast with the Standard/Enhanced RTD protocol checked. You set this on the Outputs tab: double-click the port to open Configure Output, make sure it is enabled, choose an output type (Daktronics lists Scores - Enhanced RTD as the usual choice for its controllers), then pick the data for that output. A flashing green indicator means data is leaving Sports Wire.

Step 5: The yearly license

Sports Wire 4000 has to be relicensed every year. Daktronics' update guide has you read the serial number from the registration window and send it to Daktronics tech support, who check billing and return an unlock code. A renewal that lapsed over the summer is a classic first-game surprise. Do the same on the backup PC.

Step 6: Old games, wrong day, or missing games

If the board shows yesterday's games next to today's, or games appear late, the cause is usually the daily schedule clear running before STATS has rolled over. We cover the exact times in when Sportswire 4000 clears the schedule. If team names or logos are blank, see missing out-of-town logos.

What we do before every home date

From the booth: open Diagnostics an hour before gates, confirm today's slate is the one loaded, and look at the ribbon from the bowl, not just the preview. Keep the backup PC on the same version and license as the primary. And decide in advance who calls STATS or Daktronics if the light goes red, so nobody is finding a phone number during the anthem.

Where GameSlate fits

The hands-off option

GameSlate skips the data-template chain entirely. It renders finished out-of-town pages in your look and writes them to the content share your show already plays, so there is no driver, schedule clear, output port or logo-file mapping to keep alive. Scores, clocks and finals update within a minute all game, and if the internet drops the board holds its last good pages and your phone gets a text with the cause. It runs on the Daktronics machine you already own and installs remotely in under an hour.

Quick answers

Why is my Sportswire 4000 STATS connection light red?

Daktronics says a red STATS driver light with an error about accessing the XML STATS database usually means the STATS account is locked, often after repeated wrong password attempts. STATS (Stats Perform) has to unlock it.

Why did Sportswire 4000 stop getting scores in 2023?

Stats Perform changed its feed URL in early 2023. Daktronics' fix is updating Sports Wire 4000 to version 2.1.24.0 or later, with no port or configuration changes.

Sportswire 4000 shows data but the board is blank. Why?

Daktronics points to the output port: it should be UDP 20000 by default (20001 and up for more outputs), broadcast, with the Standard/Enhanced RTD protocol checked.

Does Sportswire 4000 need a yearly license?

Yes. Daktronics' update guide says the license must be renewed every year with an unlock code from Daktronics tech support.
